Biography

POLLY BUTLER CORNELIUS, soprano, is a frequent performer of opera, oratorio and song recitals and throughout the United States. She has received awards and recognition from the National Association of Teachers of Singing (Artist Award), the Orpheus Vocal Artist Competition, the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, the Fort Worth Opera Company, and Shreveport Opera. 

She has performed leading roles with The Opera Company of North Carolina, the Piedmont Opera Theatre, the Brevard Music Festival and Opera Carolina. She has been a soloist with the North Carolina Symphony, the American Institute of Musical Studies Orchestra in Graz, Austria, the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, and the Eastern Music Festival. She has also been a featured soloist in the Duke Chapel and at Foundry Methodist Church in Washington, DC for President Clinton in 2000. 

Her vocal coaches in New York include Arlene Shrut, Warren Jones and Nico Castel, and she has performed under many distinguished opera conductors including Evan Rogister, Joseph Colaneri, Benton Hess, Valery Ryvkin and the late Norman Johnson. 

In June, 2008, Polly was invited to perform an American Song Recital at the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy. This December, she will perform the soprano solos in Handel’s Messiah with the Greensboro Oratorio Society in War Memorial Auditorium. She is presently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at UNCG where her research is focused on vocal ornamentation. 

Also a dedicated teacher, Polly is a full-time Lecturer of Voice at Elon University where she teaches voice and vocal pedagogy. Her current and former students are performing in regional theatres and opera houses, on Broadway, and with National Broadway touring companies.
